The A.S.H.S. Gypsy Jazz Guitar Ensemble has been a popular program at the school under the direction of Mr. Steve Ellis for the past six years, offering the guitar students there an opportunity to extend their skills and musical palate.

The students play using traditional Maccaferri guitars to play a selection of Gypsy Jazz standards, such as Minor Swing, J’Attendrai and Viper’sDream, made popular by the likes of the great Django Reinhardt and Séphane Grappelli, and have had the pleasure of performing at school concerts, the Queen’s Cup, local restaurants, various other schools, and busking on the streets of Bunbury.

The music which came to prominence in Paris during the 1930s to 1950s has folk roots and is heavily influenced by the elements of jazz swing and the art of improvisation. It is a music that is enjoyed by young and old and is sure to get toes tapping and hearts reminiscing.

The students range from year seven to year 12 and are all students of the Australind S.H.S. Guitar Program and Jazz Specialist course.

We look forward to transporting your imagination to the cafes of Paris!
